Thank you to all that volunteered your time for Scouting for Food on Nov 13 and 20.  We collected 1,850 lbs. of food for the Columbia Food Bank.  A great achievement.

We also Thank Ironville United Methodist Church's Men's Group for providing a hot meal the morning of Nov 13.

Spring Camping at Tuckahoe

posted May 27, 2010 1:59 PM by keith harshaw

Pack 181 Spring Fling Campout (May 14-16, 2010)

Our Spring Fling campout was held at Camp Tuckahoe near Dillsburg, PA.  Over the weekend, approximately 55 scouts and their parents attended.  The campout did not officially begin until noon on Saturday but a bunch of brave scouts and their parents trekked over in a violent thunderstorm Friday night.  Though the weather tried to work against them, they arrived safely, worked diligently and successfully started a fire.  Fun and conversation was had around the campfire until quiet time at which time mostly everyone moved inside.  Lights out occurred shortly thereafter.

Saturday began with a robust and flavorful breakfast of scrambled eggs with bacon or sausage, river potatoes, and assorted other breakfast fare.  At the same time we sat down to breakfast, we lost electricity at the camp.  After breakfast, the scouts had free time to themselves and explored the area enthusiastically.

Our official beginning began with Keith Harshaw welcoming everyone and then Colin McCaskey (and others) served lunch of ‘make your own sub’ which was devoured by all.  There was still no electricity at this time, which was throwing a damper on what Colin was planning for dinner.  Saturday’s busy schedule began with a hike led by Keith Harshaw.  After the hike, the scouts broke into three groups to attend ‘work shops’ on bottle rockets, compass direction, and a fitness trail.

      Bottle rockets – Keith Harshaw

      Compass – Steve Splain

      Fitness Trail – Jim Stuckey

After these sessions were over, the scouts proceeded to gather kindling for the evening’s campfire.  Dinner was held at approximately 5:00 p.m. (with electricity – finally) and consisted of tacos and rice and was appreciated by all.  Jungle Juice seemed to be the beverage of choice for our scouts.  The troop then held a rousing game of kickball (parents verses scouts).  It seemed an even match this year, and a good time was had by all.  With dusk approaching, some downtime was had and then all gathered around the campfire for skits put on by the various dens.  Camp songs were song and all enjoyed cookies and delicious ice cream sandwiches to end this busy day.  Quiet time began at 10:00 and lights out occurred (again) not too long after that.

Breakfast began early on Sunday with most having eaten their cereal and fruit by 8:00 a.m.  After breakfast the scouts enjoyed plenty of free play as many parents sat in on the Den Leaders and Committee meetings.  After the meeting, scouts and their parents packed up and were on their way home by 10:00 a.m.

Camp Tuckahoe Information

posted May 10, 2010 7:54 AM by keith harshaw   [ updated May 10, 2010 8:06 AM ]

We have 49 people scheduled for camp this weekend.  This is a rain or shine event.  The forecast looks awesome but bring rain gear.  If you have a tent and would like to sleep outside, bring it along.  We have cots for 40 inside.  It will be tight.

How to get there...  Two caravans will be leaving Ironville United Methodist Church.  Steve Splain will lead one Friday night at 6:00.  Keith Harshaw will lead one Saturday morning at 9:00.  If you're traveling on you own you can point you can find directions here.  Do not arrive at camp prior to 7:30 on Friday.  We are staying in the Frontier Fort.

We will be working on Map & Compass and Kickball belt loops.  You should be able to get a few of the Map & Compass pin requirements too.  We'll also take a hike and  go through the Fitness/Activity trail.  A big hit from last year will return... bottle rockets.  Please bring an empty, clean 2-liter soda bottle with you.  And what would a camping trip be without a camp fire?

See you this weekend!

Spring is Here

posted Apr 16, 2010 6:40 PM by keith harshaw

Pack 181 has had a busy end of winter and it seems that the spring is bringing even more activity.  We know that there is a lot of competition for time during sports' season: baseball, swimming, soccer and more make it hard to keep all the activities going and maintain sanity.  We do have a lot planned for the spring and will continue with Pack activities during the summer.  Please see the Pack Calendar for a list of all events.

We have out spring clean up at Lake Grubb, family camping at Tuckahoe, and the Farmdale Festival all packed into this spring.  The summer brings summer camp, the Jamboree, a fishing trip, biking to the Jigger Shop in  Mt. Gretna and more.
